EH Shepard artwork: value for investors despite soaring prices

Investors are excited by opportunities offered by EH Shepard's 'non-bear' artwork

EHShepard's artwork from the Winnie-the-Pooh books is loved by children and adults throughout the world, and will continue to be so.

This is great news for investors seeking the significant long-term gains offered by the hugely enjoyable cartoon art sector.

Shepard's original artwork for the Pooh books has risen markedly in value in recent years.

An original Shepard sketch of Pooh and Piglet tracking a Woozle sold for 115,000 ($180,000) at Sotheby's in 2008.

The world record for the artist was broken in June 2011, when Shepard's original work for the penultimate drawing from Winnie-the-Pooh, in which Pooh and Piglet walk away into the sunset, sold for $194,000 at Bonhams.

Arguably Shepard's best work was reserved for the satirical magazine Punch. Yet, importantly for investors, it remains vastly undervalued.

Tim Benson, curator of London's Political Cartoon Gallery, recently told the BBC: "Despite the fact that his political cartoons are in some ways far more interesting and have far more work in them [than the Pooh illustrations], they sell for a fraction of the price."

RCG Price, writing in his history of Punch, commented that "the rest of Punch began to look static," when Shepard joinedthe staffin 1921.

Our experts have sourced a superb originalPunch drawing by Shepard. Featuring a depiction of Mr Punch, and signed by the artist, the ink work is thought to have been used as the front cover for the January to June 1936 CXC volume of the magazine.
