DRC is pick of the bunch at Bonhams' Hong Kong wine and whisky sale

A Domaine de la Romane-Conti assortment made $33,000 at Bonhams' May auction

Bonhams' Fine & Rare Wines and Rarest Whisky Auction held in Hong Kong on May 24 saw spirited bidding by enthusiastic fine wine and whisky collectors.

92% of the wine lots sold for a total value 678,430.

The top lots were Burgundian wines, with Domaine de la Romane-Conti (DRC) assortments occupying four of the top 10 lots.

The leading two sales were cases of Domaine de la Romane-Conti assortments from the vintages of 1999 and 1996, which sold for 20,447 and 15,780 respectively.

Romane-Conti is popular with Asian investors

Achieving the third highest price were 12 bottles of Chteau Lafite Rothschild 1996, which made 14,870.

While not reaching the same heights as Christie's recent Chateau Latour Hong Kong auction, the results suggest that buying modern vintages at moderate prices could be a nice alternative investment for later years.

All 71 lots of rare whisky were snapped up at the sale, with the top two lots being a bottle of 52-year-old Macallan Select Reserve 1946 and a bottle of Macallan 1938 Red Stripe, which sold for 3,531 each.

Commanding the third highest price was a bottle of Macallan Royal Marriage produced in 1981 to commemorate the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. It is a special vatting of whisky distilled in 1948 and 1961, the years the two were born.

The sale is a reminder, if one is needed, that fine wines and spirits are increasingly attractive to Asian investors. This is great news for those looking to sell in the coming years, as the Asian market has opened up the possibility for greater competition, and greater returns.
