Douglas Fairbanks' Pickfair beds bring $16,250 to PFC Auctions

Two beds from Douglas Fairbanks' Pickfair mansion sold well yesterday

Two beds that were once housed in Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickfords' famed Pickfair mansion sold with excellent results at PFC Auctions yesterday (September 28).

"King of Hollywood" Douglas Fairbanks is best known for his swashbuckling roles in early silent films such as Robin Hood, the Mark of Zorro and The Thief of Bagdad. Together with his wife Mary Pickford - who ranks 24th in the American Film Institute's greatest female stars of all time - and Charlie Chaplin,he was also a founding member ofthe legendary United Artists film studio.

The Hollywood stars' estate was once one of the most celebrated homes in the world, with Life Magazine describing it as "a gathering place only slightly less important than the White house, and much more fun." The celebrity couple were renowned for their lavish dinner parties, with guests such as President Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, HG Wells and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor making regular appearances.

The lavish mahogany beds were undoubtedly the resting place of many of these illustrious guests during their time at Pickfair, and continued to see famous names at the home of Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

Fairbanks Jr was an established actor and decorated naval officer, who shared his father's socialite tendencies, regularly holding parties for fellow actors, royalty and prominent members of the military. The beds were once part of his Westridge Estate in Los Angeles, which is now the home of director Steven Spielberg.

Consigned to auction by Fairbanks Jr's daughter, Daphne Fairbanks, and accompanied by her letter of provenance, the beds sold for an impressive 10,028 ($16,274).
