The instrument, which belonged to bassist Krist Novoselic, was purchased from a pawn shop especially for the filming of the famed Smells Like Teen Spirit video, with Novoselic well aware that it would be smashed into pieces during the shoot.

The video for Smells Like Teen Spirit has since become internationally renowned, with Guinness World Records naming it the most played video on MTV Europe. It also placed at number four in VH1's 100 Greatest Videos list.
