'Demand for large diamonds from investors continues to reach new heights'

So says Christie's, whose upcoming sales promise a wealth of multi-coloured collectible jewels

With just weeks remaining until the start of the spring auction season for jeweller Christie's New York has announced additional highlights of its Magnificent Jewels sale on April 12.

The sale promises an exceptional line-up of top-quality fancy coloured diamonds in shades of pink, blue and yellow.

Christie's had previously announced its star lot of the sale: a Fancy Vivid Purple Pink diamond of 10.09 carats estimated at $12-15m.

In keeping with significant demand among collectors, the upcoming sale will also offer a wealth of highly sought after jewels, including Fancy Vivid Blue, Fancy Vivid Yellow, and Fancy Intense Pink diamonds which boast, in the words of Christie's, "superior size, clarity, and colour saturation."

"Our 2010 global jewellery sales total - the highest ever for any auction house at $426 million - was led by extraordinary prices for coloured diamonds," said Rahul Kadakia, Head of Jewellery at Christie's New York, in a statement.

These included the BVLGARI Blue sold in New York for a World Record price of $1.4m per carat, and the Perfect Pink, sold in Hong Kong for $23.1m.

"Demand for large coloured diamonds from connoisseurs and investors continues to reach new heights," said Mr Kadakia.

"We look forward to starting the spring season with this exceptional group of top coloured diamonds, curated with the specific desires of today's collectors in mind."
