Confederate 'Cammann' imprint stamp makes 146% increase on estimate

One of only two Confederate stamps bearing the Cammann imprint on cover has sold

One of two examples of the "Cammann" imprint on the Confederate 10c carmine stamp on cover has topped Robert A Siegel Auction Galleries' sale of United States Postal History, held on May 23 in New York.

10c Carmine CammannResearch has suggested that Cammann was a lithographic worker

It made $18,500, achieving a 146.6% increase on the $7,500 high estimate.

The stamp is known as the "Cammann" imprint due to the word being printed in the selvedge, with research suggesting that Cammann was a lithographic worker. Five examples of this rare addition are known on the 10c stamps, though only two are found on covers, leading Siegel to describe it as "one of the most outstanding of all general issue covers".
