Classic Car show in Michigan

200 classic cars are appearing at the Concours d'Elegance in Rochester, Michigan this Sunday after an RM auction

The 30th Concours d'Elegance is taking place in Meadow Brook Hall Grounds Sunday, after the 15th RM auction on Saturday.

The cars on display will include a navy blue and black 1929 Rolls-Royce Springfield Phantom I Brewster. Its owner Larry Markey is very proud of it. The Phantom was one of only 300 made in 1929 and sold for $21,000 - 40 times as much as a Ford Model A. Amazingly, Markey picked it up for $2,500 in 1973 with 54,000 miles on the clock.

Another regular at the show is Lee Barthel who will be showing his 1935 Auburn 851 coup.

"I really enjoy looking at other people's cars and enjoy other people looking at ours. It's kind of a two-way street," Barthel said. "We're in a different economy. It's a lot of entertainment, $25 per person to see millions of dollars in cars. It's a good bargain."

"Someone told me the original owner had the car in their garage. They just had it stored for 30 years in the family garage. I really own the car because I really like it. I like the engineering and quality of the car. The engineering was very advanced."

Tom Celani, who owns a shop selling Harley Davidson motorcycles, is also displaying a car at the show: a spectacular 1966 Ford Cobra painted azure blue which was in Japan for 15 years before travelling to California. Celani was tipped off that he would find it there by a friend and travelled all the way to the state specially.

"When you collect cars, people know what your favourites are," he said. "They don't really come up for sale; they're traded without people knowing about it. I fell in love with the Cobra, and we've owned it for close to seven years."
