Chinese Snuff Bottle Sets World Record Price At Bonhams

The Bonhams auction featuring part IV of the celebrated Mary and George Bloch Collection of snuff bottles took place in Hong Kong on November 28 with exceptional results. Following on from the first three sales, which set 11 world record prices and saw every single bottle sold, the most recent sale set the new World Record for a single Chinese snuff bottle.

The item in question was a famille-rose enamelled glass "European-subject" snuff bottle, produced during the Emperor Qianlong period in the workshops of the Chinese Imperial Palace. The designs on the bottle feature a combination of Chinese landscapes and European women, clearly demonstrating the influence of European culture on Chinese artisans at a time when it was not unusual for European craftsmen to be found working within the Imperial workshops.

The bottle appeared on the auction block with an pre-sale estimated value of HK$4,900,000 - $9,000,000, but a succession of bidders took the final price to HK$25.3 million (US$3,328,400) as it sold to an anonymous Asian telephone bidder.

In all, the auction featured 170 lots and brought a sales total of HK$59,637,000 (US$7,633,536).
