Cheeky Marilyn Monroe pop art brings $31,250 in New York

Ron English's Large Marilyn Red Peach starred at Philips de Pury's exceptional FILM auction

Philips de Pury & Company's FILM sale brought a celebration of art and cinema to the auction block in New York last Thursday (June 24).

The sale featured works by Andy Warhol, photography by Hollywood legend Dennis Hopper and other iconicmemorabilia from the worlds of art and cinema.

In the end, the top lot was an artwork featuring Marilyn Monroe which arguably rivals Warhol'sfamous portraits of the Some Like It Hot star.

Ron English's Large Marilyn Red Peach, featuring Monroe with Mickey Mouse's face in place of her breasts, appeared with a pre-sale estimate of$10,000-15,000.

Acquired directly from the artist, the synthetic polymer paint and silkscreen on canvas - measuring 52 x 30 inches - realised a final price of $31,250, including buyer's premium.

Also auctioned was an artwork which will be more than familiar to fans of controversial cinema: Herman Makkink's penis-shaped Rocking Machine, a kinetic sculpture from 1969.

Rocking Machine featured as a prop in one of the more violent scenes in the Stanley Kubrick directed movie Clockwork Orange. The film was later withdrawn from cinemas after audiences were shocked by its content.

Makkink's sculpture matched its higher estimate, eventually selling for dead-on $25,000, including buyer's premium.

Meanwhile, collectors or investors with an interest in 'saucy' Marilyn Monroe memorabilia can find one of her most intimate items, a piece of lingerie worn by the star, presently for sale on a market.

Or, if you're more interested in what was going on in Monroe's mind, this signed cheque paid to her psychiatrist is also available to buyers.
