Charlie Chaplin bowler hat and cane may see $60,000 at Bonhams

Bonhams' Entertainment Memorabilia sale offers a Charlie Chaplin bowler hat and cane

The November 18 Entertainment Memorabilia auction at Bonhams Los Angeles will offer an original Charlie Chaplin cane and bowler hat.

Charlie Chaplin Tramp bowler hat and cane auctionThe estimate seems low given past sales at auction

The items were instrumental in the creation of Chaplin's most famous character, The Little Tramp, who was first seen in 1915's The Tramp. After appearing several times he was retired following 1936's Modern Times.

The cane features "CCLT 36" inscribed in black ink, with the CC representing Chaplin's initials and LT meaning Little Tramp. Unfortunately, the felt black bowler hat bears only the remnants of a paper label on the interior, resulting in its manufacturer remaining a mystery.

The items were first presented to wax sculptor Katherine Stubergh Keller, who had met Charlie Chaplin in 1936 after being commissioned to create a bust of the actor. In 1966 Keller then passed the cane and hat to Herbert Moore of the Mammoth Cave Wax Museum in Kentucky, who has provided a certificate of authenticity.

Accompanied by a newspaper clipping showing Chaplin and Keller together with her sculpture, the lot is expected to sell for $40,000-60,000. This appears to bea conservative estimate given past sales, with Chaplin's first bowler hat selling for $18,750 alonein 2011, and Bonhams selling another hat and cane combo for $139,250 in the same year.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a rare autographed photo of Charlie Chaplin in his most famous guise, which is sold with a fascinating letter to Chaplin from his former office boy Frank Traughber.
