The collection is rooted in scandal as, subsequent to his wife's death, Barcena's husband discovered her numerous affairs and ordered that their daughter burn every item of Barcena's clothing that remained, "because they belonged to an adulteress," the Telegraph newspaper reported in October.

Instead, Barcena's daughter wrapped her mother's designer clothes up in dust sheets and hid armfuls of elaborate gowns at the back of her own wardrobe.

Away from the Barcena items, the carefully curated event will boast a host of designer brands, including luxurious Hermes handbags and rare vintage pieces by a diverse array of designers. As such, the auction presents an opportunity to acquire exceptional examples of early 20th century fashion.

AChristie's online sale, dedicated to handbags and shoes, is currently running alongside the Vintage Couture auction, with bidding coming to a close on November 30.

Collectors of film stars' designer clothing will also be looking forward to December's Greta Garbo estate auction, which will feature 50 dresses.
