Captain America film costume beats estimate by 679% at US auction

The film-worn Captain America costume sold for $233,700 in Chicago on April 14

A costume worn in 2011 blockbuster film Captain America: The First Avenger has smashed its estimate at a sale in Chicago.

The "complete hero" film-worn suit achieved $233,700, 679% up on its $30,000 high-estimate at the Captain America: The First Avenger Auction on April 14.

It was employed in the $368.6m global grossing movie in all scenes following the "invasion montage" and was also used in a considerable amount of promotional material surrounding the film's release.

The ballistic nylon suit was offered with a rubber Colt .45 pistol, a leather mask, boots, gloves and a shield.

The sale is a reminder to collectors of the combined power of the movie and comic-book memorabilia market, and in particular the public's appetite for Captain America. Last year a copy of Captain America #1 broke the world record for the Marvel comic, achieving $343,000.

An original full scale, screen-used "Mark II Autopsy" suit from 2010 film Iron Man 2 also performed well, making $110,000 against a high-estimate of $80,000.

The 75 inch high suit was created by the renowned movie production artists at Legacy Effects and is the only complete Iron Man suit ever offered at public auction.

It is constructed from fiberglass resin with an incredibly detailed "metalised" finish to make it resemble stainless steel alloy. Within the suit is an intricate assembly of electronics including wire loom, metal hoses and cables.

Marvel's much anticipated The Avengers film, set for US release in May 2012, is sure to boost the market for its rare comics and movie memorabilia still further, so watch this space.
