Burgundy and mature Bordeaux see strong prices with Sotheby's

The best of Burgundy and mature Bordeaux sold well at Sotheby's London auction

Sotheby's has seen strong prices paid for top Burgundy and mature Bordeaux wines, as the previously ailing wine market shows signs of picking up.

With the wine market rocked by a correction, only the finest wines are seeing strong results as confidence starts to grow

The sale, held in London on June 18, was topped by a 12-bottle DRC assortment of the 1999 vintage, which sold for 25,850 ($43,945) to comfortably meet its 22,000-30,000 estimate.

With the Bordeaux market still in recovery from a sharp correction, only the most mature and well-respected bottles are selling well.

An Asian buyer snapped up six bottles of Chateau Petrus' 2000 for 14,688 ($24,969), while a European buyer paid 13,513 ($22,971) a 12-bottle case of the 1994 vintage.

Stephen Mould, European Head of Sotheby's Wine Department, commented: "The top lot of the sale was the Domaine de la Romane Conti Assortment 1999, highlighting the enduring appeal of great Burgundy.

"Mature vintages of Bordeaux were in demand, with 5 bottles of Chteau Latour 1961 realising 9,400 ($15,994). Parcels of Vintage Port were snapped up, including three cases of Taylor's 1977, which sold over the high estimate at 705 ($1,199) per case."
