Brooks Robinson's complete Baltimore Orioles uniform topped Julien's Sports Legends auction

A complete Baltimore Orioles uniform worn by third baseman Brooks Robinson has seen the highest bids in Julien's Sports Legends auction on June 1 in Beverly Hills.

Worn during the 1969 World Series, the uniform sold for $51,200, making an outstanding 156% increase on its $20,000 pre-sale estimate.

Brooks Robinson is considered one of the best defensive third basemen that baseball has ever seen, nicknamed The Human Vacuum Cleaner. He played his entire professional career for the Orioles, with a 22-year innings from 1955-1977.

A much-celebrated player, he took part in 18 All-Star games and has won various accolades, including the World Series with the Orioles in 1966 and 1970.

1969 was not such a successful year for the Orioles, with the New York Mets taking the World Series from them in five games.

It was following the final game that the dejected Robinson gave his entire uniform to his friend Whalen Monica, who had been present in the Orioles' locker room at the time.

Monica then gave the uniform to his son-in-law Fred Florio, asking Robinson to write Florio a note attesting to its authenticity, which was included in the sale.

Also accompanying was a colour photo of Monica and Robinson with Orioles manager Earl Weaver.

Also selling well among baseball memorabilia was a Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio signed baseball, which just topped its $10,000 high estimate to sell for $10,240.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a fantastic selection of sports memorabilia for sale.
