British Guiana 1852 4c stamp up 49.5% on estimate

A British Guiana 1852 4c was the star of an estimate-smashing Commonwealth stamps auction

A British Guiana 1852 4c was the star lot in a sale featuring a variety of Commonwealth stamps on June 13.

The rare issue was in very fine condition, it featured a neat Demerara 1853 circular date stamp, good to very large margins, and a bright colour.

These factors all helped contribute to its price of 4,485, 49.5% above the 3,000 estimate.

A Canada 1864 2c imperforate block of nine also performed superbly.

The rare unused multiple, featuring very close to good margins and two small scissor cuts in margins, sold for 4,600, comfortably up on its 3,300 valuation.

The Warwick, UK auction also featured an extremely rare Canada 1851 12d unfinished die proof, which doubled its estimate with a 2,415 showing.

Printed on bond paper in pale violet, and displaying "good to enormous margins", it is a further reminder to collectors of the considerable desire forinvestment-grade stamps from America's neighbours to the north.

Canada stamp enthusiasts looking for the jewel for their collection should investigate a sensational finished version of the 1851 12d stamp, which we are delighted to have available today. It is, in our opinion, the finest Canadian stamp in existence, and even has its own name: The Black Empress.
