British Commonwealth stamps and others for sale

150th sale of world-class Australian stamp auctioneers promises some gems

The 150th sale of the world-class stamp auctioneers Prestige Philately promises to throw up some treasures on Saturday, September 5.

Lots will include a selection of British Commonwealth stamps, mostly unmounted, with a book price of AU$1,200.

These include Antigua QEII 1953 pictorials, a block of six Australia 1971-73 7c with jumped perforations and assorted Bermuda, Barbados, Canadian and Indian stamps.

Elsewhere, a 9d violet Watermark Inverted BW #25a - of which only around 24 used examples are known - will be up for sale.

Although slightly perforated and a little aged, hopes are high for the stamp estimated at AU$1,000 - onesold for US$2,645 in February 2007.

Higher-priced lots include a bock of 12 1862-67 1d orange-vermilion SG22 stamps with no watermark, going under the hammer with a book price of AU$4,000.

Elsewhere, a 1d reddish brown horizontal block of four 1880 Surcharge 'Half-penny' stamps are hoped to bring AU$2,500 due to their rarity and desirability.

(A rejoined block of two pairs sold for an impressive AU$2,875 at a 2004 Sydney auction)

The sale will be held at the Prestige Philately Showroom in Belgrave, Melbourne. Pre-sale viewings will be held between Monday August 31 and Friday September 4, 10am-6pm.
