British Antique Dealers' Association

The British Antique Dealers' Association (BADA) is the trade association for the leading antique dealers in Britain.

The BADA was founded in 1918 and has almost 350 member dealers, all of whom are experts in their chosen fields of specialisation. All its members adhere to a strict code of practice, which ensures ethical trading and a high level of consumer protection.

The association organizes the annual BADA Antiques and Fine Arts Fair, one of the country’s leading events for both dealers and collectors, along with a number of other shows across the country.

It also supports the funding of restoration courses through the BADA Cultural and Educational Trust, and offers services such as consumer information, customs certification and free arbitration between BADA dealers and customers in the event of any disputes.

Association bye-laws

The BADA members all abide by the association’s strict code of practice. Bye-laws within this code include:

“Any article offered for sale by a Member is to be deemed to be represented by the Member to be antique (as defined in this Bye-law) unless there is a clear indication to the contrary.

The word ‘antique’ when applied to an object sold or offered for sale by a Member shall mean an object which:

…was manufactured more than one hundred years prior to the date on which it is offered for sale, and is in substantially the same condition as when originally made and has not at any time been added to or altered except for the purpose of necessary repair.”

“The stock of antiques carried by a Member shall at all times be of a standard of quality that is not lower than the prevailing standard of quality which the Council in its absolute discretion considers to be appropriate for admission to membership of the Association.”
