The car was donated by team owner Roger Penske, and sold for $500,000, with all proceeds to benefit the NASCAR Foundations, which helps a variety of children's charities.

The sale was led by NASCAR president Mike Helton, who is himself a car collector.

Charity sales proved popular in Las Vegas, with a Dan Gurney Signature Edition 2008 Saleen Ford Mustang GT fastback selling for $180,000, with proceeds to the Austin Hatchet Foundation for paediatric cancer.

Also selling was a 1968 Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 Coupe, which made $176,000. A rare matching numbers example in silver, this was the winner of the Preservation Cup at Cavallino in 2012 and remains is highly original condition, with only 39,000 original miles.

Early automobiles in the sale included a rare 1927 Stutz that had been restored to original condition, complete with its original motor and transmission. Having been used as a show car and not driven on the road, it sold for $77,000.

Following was a stunning 1931 Lincoln Model K, which surpassed expectations to achieve $352,000. Having undergone a high quality restoration that has yet to be shown at CCCA and AACA events, the car is set to score very well at any classic car show in the hands of its future owner.
