The weapon was discovered hidden in Clyde's skirt while her body was being prepared for burial at the Conger Funeral Home in Los Angeles in 1934 after they were ambushed and killed in Louisiana.

The Colt was given by the embalmer to a friend as a souvenir - later passing via descent to the consignor.

Bonnie and Clyde terrorised America during the early 1930s, robbing banks and stores and murdering a number of police officers and civilians.

They were young, good looking and glamorous - and their story captured the public imagination.

They have since seeped into the pop-cultural narrative, andwere notablyportrayed by Faye Dunnaway and Warren Beatty in Arthur Penn's 1967 film.

Their legendary status ensures that the market for memorabilia pertaining to them is strong. Two guns found on the dead couple's bodiessold for a combined $504,000 last year.
