Bonhams Japanese art auction showcases superb Meiji works

Bonhams Fine Japanese Works of Art will be highlighted by a $45,000 Meiji incense burner

Bonhams has announced that its Fine Japanese Works of Art auction, which will be held on March 19 in New York, will be led by a fine selection of Meiji period (late 19th century) works.

Bonhams Japanese Art auctionThe Meiji period saw the 'rise of cultural exchange between East and West', according to Bonhams, resulting in a distinctive style. This cloisonne vase is estimated at $15,000-18,000

The top lot of the auction is a massive bronze incense burner by Suzuki Masayoshi, which was intended to "capture the imagination of the newly emerging Western market". It will sell for $35,000-45,000.

Building on the success of woodblock prints at Bonhams, following a November 2012 that saw a Toshusai Sharaku print sell for $117,500, the current sale will offer an outstanding selection of traditional works, highlighted by a Katsushika Hokusai print at $3,500.
