Bonhams expects this unique Silver Messel dish to auction for $24,600

Given as a 21st birthday present to Linley Messel, the rare item has strong links to the Royal family

A unique silver rose water dish with links to the Royal family, the Royal Ballet and one of the National Trust's most famous gardens, will be sold on June 22 as part of Bonhams Fine Silver Sale.

The rare Messel dish is estimated to attract a price of between 10,000-15,000 ($24,629). It was given as a 21st birthday present to Linley Messel, whose sister was Anne Messel, the mother of world famous photographer Lord Snowden.

Given the fact Lord Snowden was married to Princess Margaret, the Silver dish has strong links to British Royalty. This connection certainly makes it a valuable item.

Linley Messel's brother, Oliver, went on to become one of the country's most celebrated set and costume designers in the 1950s-'40s.

He famously designed the Royal Ballet's landmark production of 'Sleeping Beauty' in 1946. In later life Oliver moved to the Caribbean and began a new career, as a house designer, in Barbados.

Another of his prominent designs was for Princess Margaret on the island of Mustique, called Les Jolies Eaux, meaning Beautiful Waters.

The Messel family lived at Nymans in West Sussex, where following generations indulged in a passion for gardening.

They created one of the great English gardens there, which was given to the National Trust in 1953. It now attracts more than 200,000 visitors every year.
