The minister is reported to have notified Interpol and the auction house, and is requesting that Bonhams provides documents to prove that the items were legally exported. The auction house has not yet commented.

Egypt's museums and institutions have suffered greatly in the recent revolution, with the Malawi National Museum reported to have had many of its artefacts looted during protests. UNESCO has placed all the items on its red list in an attempt to stop them from being sold.
