Great Escaper: Stalag Luft III POWs signed photo
Veteran Bertram 'Jimmy' James (1916-2008) is noted for his legendary escape from the prison camp of Stalag Luft III, known as The Great Escape.
The Squadron Leader helped dig the first RAF escape tunnel at Stalag Luft I, at Bart in 1941. Later, he was one of 76 men to break out of the supposedly escape-proof Nazi POW camp of Stalag Luft II. In total, he spent some 5 years as a prisoner-of-war at German camps, attempted escape at least 11 times, succeeding twice.
He was also humble in the face of post-war media attention, stating: "I was just a guy who wanted to get home; I was no hero."
One of the most iconic World War II films was based on this heroic attempt; 1963's film The Great Escape was based on Paul Brickhill's 1950 book on the subject.
