A sporting gun belonging to champion bare knuckle boxer Benjamin Caunt will sell

A six-bore double-barrelled sporting gun owned by the legendary boxer Benjamin Caunt will sell as part of Holts Auctioneers' June 20 sale in London.

Ben Caunt gun auction Caunt won the heavyweight title after defeating Nick Ward in a 35 round bare knuckle slog

The gun is engraved with "Benjamin Caunt/Champion of England" and will sell with a 5,000-7,000 ($7,626-10,677) estimate.

Caunt, weighing in at 18 stone and measuring six feet two inches in height, was the heavyweight boxing champion from 1838 until 1845.

It is believed that London's famous Big Ben was named after the boxer, who was a favourite of MPs that voted on the name.

On April 18, Harold Macmillan's Purdey 12-bore sold for 18,000 ($27,416), while Hermann Goring's sporting rifle is up for sale on April 30.

For collectors of early boxing memorabilia, we have this superb signed photograph of James J Jeffries (1875-1953), a former world heavyweight champion renowned for his tremendous power.
