Baume et Mercier Watches
Baume et Mercier Watches are luxury watches produced by the Swiss manufacturer of the same name.
The mother organization which birthed the company came into existence thanks to a longstanding tradition of watchmaking that obtained in a Swiss settler family from the French Jura. It was in 1834 that Louis Victor and Joseph Celestine Baume registered Societe Baume Frères and pledged to offer nothing but quality innovation.
The Baume and Mercier trademark was finally registered in 1920 in Geneva after the company had won several accolades for the precision of the chorography of its products. A year later, William Baume met Paul Mercier and the company was formed.
It has earned global fame through models such as Marquise, Capeland S, Classima Executives, Diamant, Hampton Classic, Hampton Milleis, Hampton Square, Linea Riviera and William Baume among others. The Riviera model appeared in 1972 with its then- revolutionary 12 sides for the 12 hours aesthetics criteria. The Linea rolled out in 1987 and has firmly remained a member of the most sought-after list.
Come 1998, the Capeland was born bearing high quality automatic chronographs. The Classima Executives Magnum XXL has been described as the largest Classima version to date. Powered by a Valjoux 7753, it comes in at 44 mm with a well balanced design and can be worn both as a sport as well a dress watch. The 200 m water resistant Capeland S Automatic has a highly-polished well-brushed finishes which greatly combine with the deep black face. It is powered by an automatic ETA 2895 movement that has a 42-hour power reverse.
A summary of four major models paints a clear picture of how valued Baume et Mercier offerings are. While a silver guilloche self winding automatic men’s Classima 8692 costs $ 24500, a polished 18 carat yellow gold-race bracelet Classima Executive Ladies watch goes for $ 6,753. When it comes to Capelands, the prices range from $900 to a little over $2000.
A Capeland Men’s watch 8511 has a $938.70 price tag right under it. A timepiece numbered 8402 from the same family costs $ 2,133. A Riviera MOAO8797 goes for $1,614.99 while a Diamant women’s watch with a stainless steel water resistant case is priced at $1492.
Popularity with Collectors
The first factor that makes Baume et Mercier watches tickle collectors’ fancy is that they are pricey. Being top-of-the-range makes them hopeful contenders in the race to compete for celebrities’ attention. Thus, a San Francisco based collector confesses that among the reasons why he collects Hamptons is because Elvis Presley, Will Smith and Tommy Lee have worn them in movies.
Collectors are also interested in classic watches as opposed to recent models because with a vintage watch, there’s a high probability of stumbling upon customized, handmade features. Having opened shop as far bask as the 1800s, Baume et Mercier watches are bound to draw the attention of most collectors from the generation angle.
Christie's auctions has on record a €4,550 transaction at whose completion an Orologio in Brillianti Baume & Mercier watch was exchanged. On 17 February 2008 government auctions blog transacted a /Men’s Baume and Mercier two tone wristwatch for $1050.
