Bank of Stockton collection headlines Bonhams' coins and medals sale

The Bank of Stockton collection consists of rare banknotes from the institution's history

The First National Bank of Stockton California collection of national banknotes will headline a sale of coins and medals at Bonhams Los Angeles.

The single lot consists of five notes issued between 1873 and 1929 and valued at $120,000-150,000.

Stockton bank noteThe First National Bank of Stockton California opened in 1867

It includes an 1873 $10 national gold banknote, issued to allow prospectors to change their finds for coin during the years of the California gold rush.

It's inscribed: "1873 - Lizzie Hewlett to be kept as a keepsake being the first 10 dollar note issued and given her by her Father."

Also featured is an 1882 $10 "value back" national banknote and a set of three 1929 notes that ascend in value from $10 up to $50.

Currency from the bank is particularly rare as it only issued notes for a short period between 1873 and 1879.

An AU58-graded 1796 $10 is set to provide another highlight, with an estimate of $100,000-120,000.

The lot is the only known die pairing and displays minimal circulation. It's one of between 3,500 and 4,000 that were struck, of which only a handful survive in near-mint condition.

Bonhams describes it as "a truly magnificent example, at this grade level, of this highly important, highly elusive issue."
