Argentine meteorite could make a big impact at Christie's London

The auctioneer's Travel sale will include one item which has travelled further than most

As we've reported, Christie's upcoming Travel, Science and Natural History sale will include a wide variety of intriguing and unique collectibles, including a key section of a sundial which was once used to grow strawberries.

However, space collectors will immediately have pricked up their ears at the mention of 'natural history' and sure enough there is a representative for meteorite fans going under the hammer.

To be precise, there are two samples of the famous Campo del Cielo meteorite on offer: A smaller piece, listed at 500-800 (up to $1,300) and a larger piece 10 inches (25cm) wide. Substantial iron meteorites tend to hold their value as supply is extremely limited, so they can be used as investments.

Campo del Cielo, or Field of the Sky, meteorites have provided some notable sales down the years for space investors, including a 161kg piece which sold at Bonhams for $91,375 in 2006.

The meteorite is classified as an octahedrite - a type of iron meteorite - and consistently coveted. The larger piece carries an estimate of 3,000 - 5,000 ($4,866 - $8,110) in the auction, which takes place on April 6th in London.
