Apollo 15 pilot Jim Irwin's training suit is added to Heritage's space auction

Another rare and fascinating piece of NASA history will be open to online bids in a fortnight's time...

Do you fancy owning your own A7L Integrated Thermal Micrometeroid suit? Well you'll have a chance from October 29 onwards, when online bidding opens for Heritage's upcoming Signature Space Exploration Auction.

The garment bears Jim Irwin's name tag - aka the Lunar Module pilot for Apollo 15 (pictured top right)- and was once in his own personal collection. Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) suits of this kind were worn by the astronauts on the various Apollo missions to the Moon.

A valued piece of Apollo history: part of Irwin's EMU suit

According to Heritage's lot notes, this one was likely used by Irwin in his early training orpossibly in his position as the backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 10. Its features includean International Latex Corporation tag (listing the Model Number "2001A", Size "Irwin", Serial "003" and so on).

Interested bidders should bear in mind that the garment is only part of the EMU suit-it only covers the torso and has no connectors, helmet, gloves, or boots. Yet it remains a fascinating and valued piece of Apollo history, in "generally very good condition with only light wear and use."

The suit's provenance is confirmed byits inside tag

Heritage Auction Galleries' Signature Space Exploration event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 17. Watch this space for upcoming news on the sale.
