Morphy Auctions’ are holding a sale of the biggest collection of antique and vintage firework and firecracker memorabilia known to exist.

The collection of George Moyer, amassed over 40 years, will be auctioned off in 1,300 lots on June 22nd – 23rd. These include thousands of rare firecracker packs and labels, sparklers, caps, novelties, salutes and tubed items, posters, sample boards, catalogues and complete packs of firecrackers from America, Europe, India, China and Canada.

Brands include Evergreen, Ostrich, Ibex, Puppy, Gee Whiz, Phoenix, Battleship, Merry Go Round, Tarzan, and many more. There are also packs manufactured by Wilfong, a Texas company that exploded in the early 1950s, producing a mushroom cloud mistaken by locals for an atomic bomb attack.

Some of Moyer’s collection, complete unopened mint condition packs as well as just the preserved packaging, are extremely rare, and considered to be the only known examples of their kind. They are bright, colourful, and most feature illustrations spanning the earliest firecrackers such as the Chinese black-powder firecrackers from the early 1800s, through to later collectible items.

Firecrackers began to appear in America around the late 1800s, with simple designs and Chinese lettering. As they became more popular in the US, more elaborate designs and colours were created.

Moyer began collecting firework packaging and associated items at the age of 10. He now owns an amusement machine company.
