Antique Clichy Paperweights are glass paperweights produced by the French manufacturer Clichy in the 19th century.

History and Description

Clichy paperweights were made in the town of Clichy, an industrial suburb of Paris, France. A glassworks, known as La Cristallerie de Clichy, was founded there in 1840 by Louis Joseph Maës, and liquidated in 1870. Best known for paperweights, the factory also produced bottles, jars, decanters, jugs and tumblers, cut and engraved in the Venetian style.

However, the Clichy glassworks was most famous for it's paperweights, which often featured a pink or white rose somewhere in the design.

The canes used in Clichy paperweights were made of opaque glass, and the letter 'C' was often (not always) used as a signature, placed within one of the canes. Very few were dated, and rarely, the name 'Clichy' is found in very fine letters.

Guide For Collectors

Designs typical of Clichy are a wreath or cluster formation of flowers within crystal, featuring an open purple flower, alongside the signature pink or white rose. The canes are noticeably flared at the base, and inserted in a brightly coloured opaque background.

Background colours commonly used are rose, green, purple or white. In Clichy millefiori weights the canes are arranged on a crystal background, usually with a Clichy rose somewhere among the canes. A popular design was canes and roses set against a lacy filligree background.

Clichy also produced mushroom and overlay weights.
