The NY auction will feature a fine timepiece of the Officer-in-Charge of the Navy's Bathyscaph Trieste

As we've reported, Antiquorum will be rounding off the year with a grand sale of fine timepieces in New York next week with the impressive collection of 356 modern and vintage watches led by a Vacheron Constantin "Saint Gervais", No. 55.

Made to mark the occasion of the Quarter Millennium of Vacheron Constantin in 2005, it is a water-resistant platinum wristwatch with a visible one-minute tourbillon regulator, perpetual calendar and leap year indication. But of course this is not the only piece worthy of note on offer.

For the Rolex aficionado and history enthusiast, there is an exceptional and historically significant Rolex GMT- Master, ref. 6542 that belonged to Don Walsh, a Lieutenant of the US Navy and Officer-in-Charge of the Navy's Bathyscaph Trieste.

Lieutenant Walsh together with Jacques Piccard piloted the Bathyscaph Trieste to the deepest place in the World Ocean; the Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench 200 miles Southwest of the island of Guam at a depth of 35,800 feet.

Subsequent to the dive, Rolex gifted Lieutenant Walsh a Rolex GMT- Master in April, 1960.Also in recognition of his tremendous achievement, Lieutenant Walsh was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Navy's second highest non-combat medal, by President Eisenhower at a ceremony held at The White House in 1960.

Walsh's Rolex is a rare, 1958, two time zone, centre seconds, self-winding, water-resistant wristwatch with date and comes with a range of memorabilia and documents related to the dive. Antiquorum's sale takes place on December 8.
