Andy Murray tennis shirt from US Open to auction

A tennis shirt worn by Andy Murray in the 2012 US Open final will auction with a $12,500 high estimate

A tennis shirt worn by Andy Murray in this year's US Open final, as he ended Britain's 76 year wait for a male Grand Slam champion, is coming to a charity auction.

Murray, the current world number three, wore the Adidas shirt in his historic five set victory over Novak Djokovic in New York in September, to cap a superb year for the Scot, who had gained Olympic gold at Wimbledon just weeks earlier.

The shirt's desirability has been further enhanced by the player's signature in black pen and his letter of authenticity.

As the first British man to raise aloft a Grand Slam trophy since Fred Perry was victorious at Wimbledon in 1936, hopes are high that the shirt will meet its 5,000-8,000 ($7,958-12,734) estimate in London on December 4.

We believe that the lower end of the estimate is most realistic, based on auction precedents.

However, the passion of the British public for its sporting heroes should not be underestimated; a 2012 Olympic torch autographed by Tour de France and Olympic men's time trial winner Bradley Wiggins sold for 13,000 ($20,500) this summer, while a complete set of score sheets from the Games' Heptathlon competition, won by Jessica Ennis, achieved 4,030 ($6,400).

All funds from the sale will benefit the Angelus Foundation, which aims to educate drug users on the dangers of taking both club drugs and legal highs.

We will bring you full results here next month.
