Air Force One auction sees president's plane for sale at $50,000

A plane that served as Air Force One, carrying US presidents, opens for bidding online today

An airplane that served as part of the Air Force One fleet will sell in an online auction that opens for bidding later today (May 15).

The plane is being sold by the General Services Administration (GSA)for the incredibly low reserve price of $50,000.

The DC9-32 jetliner is among the fleet's smaller planes, and was mainly used as Air Force Two, carrying vice-presidents, first ladies and cabinet secretaries throughout the Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush administrations.

However, it did actually see service transporting US presidents, having been used to fly Bill Clinton to Buffalo in 1999, as well as to fly George W Bush on a secret trip to Bagdad in 2006.

Today, Barak Obama uses a Boeing 747, a much larger aircraft with two floors.

The winning bidder will have to pick up the plane from the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona, where it is currently being stored. Sadly, the presidential seal has since been removed, though it still features the "United States of America" lettering across its fuselage.

Paul Fraser Collectibles can't offer youa presidential plane, but we do have a superb selection of presidential memorabilia for sale.
