Aalholm classic car auction stars $1.6m 1938 Maybach Zeppelin

A 1938 Maybach Zeppelin DS8 Roadster beat its estimate by 986% at the Aalholm classic car auction

A 1938 Maybach Zeppelin DS8 Roadster has sold for 1.3m to take the prize of most valuable classic car at the auction of the Aalholm collection in Denmark.

The vehicle made a mockery of its estimate, beating its 119,700 valuation by 986% on a day that saw 181 cars from the Danish Aalholm Automobil Museum cross the auction block at the RM Auctions sale, all without reserve.

A strong performance was also seen from a 1911 Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp Silver Ghost Roi des Belges Tourer, which more than doubled its estimate to make 708,000.

Amassed over four decades, the museum's collection began with a single vehicle and grew into one of the largest and most varied of its kind.

Founded by Baron JO Raben-Levetzau in 1964, the museum covered more than a century of automotive history and wowed visitors until its closure in 2007.

RM Europe's director Max Girardo said that he was stunned by the interest that the auction had created, with 3 km of traffic jams at points.

A 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Stelvio Drophead Coupe also sold well at the August 12 auction, doubling its estimate with a 542,000 showing.

The sale achieved 10m in all, with bidders from 34 countries - evidence of the global appeal of the classic car market.
