A Very Rare 1,700 year old Gold Aureus of the Emperor Carinus in Superb Condition (PT4)

Carinus (A.D. 283-285), Gold Aureus, struck at Siscia (Sisak, Croatia) in A.D. 284

Carinus (A.D. 283-285), Gold Aureus, struck at Siscia (Sisak, Croatia) in A.D. 284, bust of Carinus left, wearing laurel-wreath and military cuirass, reverse, Liberalitas standing left, holding abacus and cornucopia, star to right, diameter approximately 20 mm, weight 5.41g.

A superb example, lustrous, good extremely fine, very rare.

Carinus is depicted in ancient sources as being one of the most depraved and cruel of Roman emperors.

He is said to have married and divorced nine times, to have put to death many innocent men on false charges, seduced the wives of nobles, and ruined his former school fellows who had taunted him as a child.

Ironically, the reverse of this coin displays Carinus's own propaganda, depicting the personification Liberalitas, meaning generosity!
