A global interest in a provincial auction...

Unusual art and militaria antiquities attract worldwide bids

Some spectacular pieces went up for auction in Clevedon, United Kingdom,September 10.

With800 lots available bids cameinfrom Finland, Australia, Beirut, China and Russia.

The auctionincluded three pieces from the C19th, the most remarkable of thewhich was an oil painting from a North American Primitive School. This sold for 10 times its estimate at 3,600.

A chess board made with ivory and bone from Visakhapatnam (India's 'Jewel of the East'), was also driven up in price by an exciting exchange of bids from around the world.

It rose from its estimate of 800-1,200 to 6,960 - particularly remarkable as it does not come with any matching pieces.

A snuffbox made from tortoiseshell clambered up from its 300-500 estimate to 2,760.

From this century, the darker but fascinating collection of Nazi militaria, including a German MP40 sub machine pistol sold for 1,800.

The militaria section was quite well developed, and along with a particularly fine collection of Third Reich daggers, there were offerings of an RAF uniform, a cockpit-clock from a 'Dambusting' Lancaster plane and a bronze signalling cannon.

The wide variety of pieces just goes to show there is something for everyone in the world of collecting. There will be another auction on November 26.
