$80k 1925-S Double Eagle leads online coin auction

And bids are continuing to rise in Hertige's online numismatic sale, due to close next week

A number of numismatic holy grails are open to bids in Heritage Auction Galleries' live online Signature US Coin auction, with lots due to close between October 22-24.

A 1925-S $20 MS66 NGC Saint-Gaudens double eagleis currently leadingthe sale, with current bids at the time of writing (Thursday, October 15) pricing it at a remarkable $80,000.

The NGC certified MS66 coin is tied to the fourth finest known, according to Heritage: "the surfaces are nearly perfect and the overall eye appeal of this remarkable double eagle is exceptional."

Next up is an exceptional 1929 $20 Double Eagle, MS65 (MS65 PCGS. CAC.). The coin was produced in large quantities with an extremely low survival rate.

Today, just a few hundred remain. This rare, relatively affordable specimen carries "exceptional aesthetic appeal" says Heritage. Bids currently stand at $75,000.

Bids for a mid-nineteenth century Kellogg & Humbert 33.85 ounce Gold Ingot, recovered from the SS Central America (dimensions 53 mm x 43 mm x 28 mm) are currently at $60,000.

Intriguingly, the ingot has an apparent impression from a coin on its right-hand side. It is guessedthat the impression was made by a double eagle in the cargo of the SS Central America.

An 1851 $50 LE Humbert Fifty Dollar (887 Thous. 50 Rev. AU55) has a distinct, octagonal shape, offered at Heritage in rare problem-free Choice AU condition.

PCGS has only certified five coins as such, and there are only five finer examples. Rarely, this AU55 has no corner bumps (which these octagonal coins often incurred), with current bids at $55,000.

Other leading coins in Heritage's sale include a stunning 1879 Flowing Hair Stella, Judd-1635, PR65 (currently at $50,000), a beautiful rare MS66 1927-S Double Eagle ($42,500), and an amazing PR66 Cameo 1895 Morgan Dollar ($40,000).

Bidding will close on the above lots in the next eight days. All prices include buyer's premium. More information can be found on the Heritage Auction Galleries website.
