$73k Enwonwu leads 'first' US African art sale

The first commercial auction of African contemporary art ever held in the US took place, last week

African and tribal art is proving big among collectors as we enter 2010's second quarter.

This was heralded by the first commercial auction of African contemporary art ever to be held in the US, by Bonhams in New York (on March 10).

As we covered in our pre-sale report, the sale'soverall highlight proved to be Africa Dances, Eve Noir, 1972, by Ben Enwonwu.

With a lower estimate of $60,000, the watercolour and pastel on board eventually brought a comfortable $73,200.

Enwonwu was a pioneer of the modern art movement in Western Africa, and the sale should gain his work increased prominence in the US - and global - art markets.

In other news, a Christie's auction of South Asian Modern and Contemporary Artwill present91 works from leading 20th-21st century artists from South Asia, India and Pakistan.

It takesplace in New York on March 23.
