$6.4m Jadeite and diamond necklace to sparkle in Hong Kong

Sothebys is holding a sale of jewellery next month which could set the standard for 2010

Following their first jewellery sale of the year in New York, which was dominated by yellow diamonds, Sothebys are holding a major auction in the growing market of Hong Kong.

This intends to be a bigger sale than the February sale. Unusally, it is themed around jadeite pieces.

Of these, the expected top lot is a jadeite necklace. Joined by circular diamonds and a platinum clasp (signed Cartier), the piece is 530mm long and consists of 35 vivid green translucent beads.

WIth a distinctly marine feel, the valuable necklace is expected to bring HK$38m-50m (thats up to US$6.44m).

Closely following this is an important and rare fancy vivid blue diamond known as the De Beers Millennium Jewel.

The pear-shaped blue diamond, which weighs 5.16 carats is flanked by two white, shield-shaped diamonds and mounted in platinum.

This is estimated at HK$36m-46m, (up to US$5.9m) but is almost more interesting than the other lot.

Last year, the biggest diamond sale of the year was a blue diamond sold by Sothebys in Geneva for US$10.5m, closely followed by a pink diamond sold by Christies in Hong Kong for US$10.3.

We will be awaiting the results of the sale, which takes place on April 7, as eagerly as Sothebys
