$541,000 Roderic O'Conor leads the way at Irish art auction

Sotheby's $3m Irish art sale provided plenty of interest for collectors on March 29

An oil on canvas by Roderic O'Conor was the leading lot at Sotheby's Irish art auction in London earlier this week.

The 1913 work, titled Landscape, Cassis, sold for 337,250, far above its high end estimate of 180,000.

The piece, which was painted in the south of France, was bought by a private collector from Ireland.

The head of Sotheby's Irish pictures, Grant Ford, told the Irish Times the work had been "keenly sought-after" and pronounced its price "fabulous".

Sotheby's told the publication that its 17th annual Irish art sale had "achieved the highest total by far for any Irish art auction worldwide in two years".

The second highest price on the day went to a 1948 work by Jack B Yeats, The Child of the Sea, which achieved 229,250.

Sales garnered 1.9m in all, with 60% of lots selling, evidence that art investors are finding some good Irish pieces at the moment.

Bonhams has recently established its own Irish art department, alongside an annual auction.
