$482k yellow diamond ring dazzles bidders in New York

Sotheby's important jewellery sale was a resounding success, and a great start to 2010

Last night, an auction headed by yellow diamonds took place at Sotheby's with all the pieces we focused on reaching impressive prices.

A set of fancy yellow intense diamond earstuds came close to their top estimate. The jewels, just over 3ct each are set in 18kt gold are an attractive, though not ostentatious pair, and were won with a successful bid of $92,500.

The rectangular cut fancy intense yellow diamond ring likewise sold on target at $122,500. But the undoubted star of the show was the heart-shaped fancy vivid yellow diamond ring.

The piece, created by Christopher Designs is an attention grabbing 10.05ct jewel - a modified brilliant-cut piece set in platinum and 22kt white gold with small round diamonds.

Bidders were impressed, and pushed the piece up close to the half-million mark. It finally left the stage for $482,500, and will no doubt be highly visible at a suitably impressive venue later this year.

Whilst impressive, Sotheby's will be hoping to top this at some point in the year. Last year their sale of a fancy vivid blue diamond for $10.5m was clearly the jewellery sale of the year.
