A new world record was set at Christie's New York last night for a Warhol self-portrait.
Self Portrait (1963-64), Warhol's first self-portrait,sparked a lengthy bidding war that sent the price well beyond its estimate to achieve $38.4m, with a private European investor coming out the victor.
The acrylic silk-screen four-panel piece, depicting Warhol with dark glasses in a photo booth, is one of Warhol's most celebrated works.

Jose's son Alberto told the New York Times: "When the material is strong collectors get excited."
