35k 'Adonis in Y Fronts' leads '60s Pop Art sale

Bonhams are tuning in and dropping out with a selection of works including D'Arcangelo and Kidner

Bonhams is going back to the 1960s on March 10, when its New Bond Street, London branch showcases a specialist auction of the era's Pop and Op Art.

Pre-sale viewings open on March 7, featuring an outstanding selection of works, including a depiction of Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger's notorious drug arrest, as depicted by the eminent pop artist Richard Hamilton.

Michael Kidner's Pink, Green and Blue wave (20k-30k)

Entitled For Release, from 1972, it carries an estimate of 10,000-15,000.

Also included is Hamilton's iconic image of Adonis in Y fronts, estimated at 25,000-35,000.

American Pop art is represented by artists including Allan D'Arcangelo (1930-1998).

Better known for his images of roads and highways, D'Archangelo's works in this sale include Inclined Horizon, in acrylic, estimated at 30,000-50,000 and Homage to Miro, also in acrylic, at 20,000-30,000.

Op Art is recognised for its optical effects on the spectator, and one of its pioneers was British artist, Michael Kidner.

Kidner was fascinated by science and spent his life experimenting with optical illusions, shapes and colour before his death in 2009.

He extensively studied wave theory and waves are frequently found in his works. This sale includes his Pink, Green and Blue Wave, which has been estimated at 20,000-30,000.

The Hungarian French artist Victor Vasarely, is famous for his abstract geometric art, and this sale includes his vividly coloured acrylic on masonite, titled Pulsar, with an estimate of 40,000-60,000.

"The 1960's were a pivotal decade for the worlds of art and design, and the following five decades have shown that Pop and Op art were two of its most influential and enduring movements," said Alan Montgomery, Senior Specialist in the Contemporary Art and Design Department at Bonhams.

D'Archangelo's Inclined Horizon (30k-50k)

"This sale includes some of the most iconic images from that period, as well as more recent examples of Pop and Op which demonstrate the importance of its legacy, both in Europe and the United States.

"From the glamour of Brigitte Bardot and Andy Warhol to the delicate optical art of Vasarely, this sale is full of fabulous 1960's style, a style which is now very much back in fashion."

The sale will coincide with the selling exhibition "Pure Sixties. Pure Bailey", a collection of David Bailey's iconic photographs from the '60s.
