$25,000 Henry Repeating Rifle shoots high at Amoskeag's antique firearms auction

The fascinating weapon - one of a huge number of fine pieces offered - is very rare in this condition

Amoskeag has just released its results for its latest sale of fine antique firearms, which took place on July 30. No doubt it took them some time to compile as over 2,500 lots were offered in the sale.

One of the great highlights was a very impressive Henry Repeating Rifle by New Haven Arms Company with all matching serial numbers.

The 24" octagon barrel has a good bore that has just one area of notable oxidation. In the auctioneer's words, "this is a very honest and all original Henry rifle".

All the markings remain clear and crisp and the iron surfaces remain quite smooth. The action has nice strong edges and a handsome patina. There are some scattered light impact and handling marks in brass but none of them are overly obtrusive.

The barrel, lever and hammer all bear a pleasing even grey-brown patina with crisp edges and just a little light pitting near the muzzle. The buttstock is walnut and rates as near excellent with lots of original finish remaining.

Then there is the stock, which fits beautifully and still shows its 'bump' beneath the sling swivel.

The remaining details to fascinate antique gun collectors are: The rifle is equipped with its original later style German silver blade front sight, original ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards with retaining screw at top and sling swivel mounted on left side of butt with corresponding screw fastened clip on left side of barrel.

Amoskeag claims that "This is a fine, completely honest Henry rifle that will perform well as an investment."

Certainly the owner has a valuable piece which was well worth the final price of $25,300.
