1st Earl Spencer's sofa to be offered by Apter-Fredericks

The 1st Earl Spencer's sofa will sell at the International Fine Art and Antique Dealers Show

A majestic 18th century sofa made for the1st Earl Spencer will be offered for sale by London dealer Apter-Fredericks at theInternational Fine Art and Antique Dealers Show, which runs from October 25-31 in New York.

1st Earl Spencer sofa James Athenian Stuart James 'Athenian' Stuart employed John Gordon to make the sofa for Spencer House in St James', London

The piece was made by upholsterer John Gordon (1748-1777) after the earl employed James "Athenian" Stuart (1713-1788) to furnish Spencer House. It is part of a suite that is considered among the finest of Gordon's work.

James Stuart is recognised as one of the leading figures in neo-classicism, leading a highly influential career under the patronage of Earl Spencer, which resulted in Stuart and Revett's publication The Antiquities of Athens, the first accurate record of classical Greek architecture.
