19th century autograph book expected to make $15,000 at Maynard's

A 19th century autograph book comes to auction from a White House doorman

An autograph book containing the signatures of some of the 19th century's most prominent figures will auction through Maynards Fine Art & Antiques in Vancouver, Canada on September 18.

Charles Loeffler autograph book Loeffler's book is unique to the hobby, as he was the only White House doorman during this period and a similar collection would have been near impossible to form

Collected by a former White House doorman, Captain Charles D A Loeffler, the book is expected to sell for $10,000-15,000.

Over a period of 40 years andunder eight presidents, from 1869-1909, Loeffler collected the signatures of all those that passed through the White House's doors. Despite the autograph collecting hobby being in its infancy, Loeffler became known for asking dignitaries for their addition to his collection.

Included within the book's pages are signatures from the likes of Ulysses S Grant, Winston Churchill, Mark Twain, The Queen of Hawaii, Buffalo Bill and Theodore Roosevelt. Adding to the appeal is the fact that most of the autographs are dated, presenting a fantastic opportunity for research.

"If you get two or more people interested in it, money is no object," the auction house's Neil McAllister told Vancouver's News 1130.

Both Loeffler's career and his autograph book are well known, with the book having been traded many times in the past40 years. One of the finest of its kind, it is sure to attract strong attention.

Paul Fraser Collectibles offers an astonishing range of autographs for sale, as well as a superb selection of presidential memorabilia.
