1982 Lamborghini Countach brings a record-breaking $567,000

The classic Italian supercar achieved the highest price ever achieved for the model in the UK

Collectors from across the UK flocked to the Brooklands Motor Museum last week, for the latest Historics at Brooklands sale.

Leading the auction was a 1982 Lamborghini Countach LP400S, one of only 321 examples ever built.

The stylish supercar was offered in remarkably original condition, having spent the past 23 years in professional storage, and showed just 8,543 miles on the clock from new.

Featuring a V-12 engine and an exhaust note that sounds like "a mixture of opera and thrash metal", the Countach offered a perfect example of the classic Italian design which became an icon the moment it was released in 1974.

"Sell the family home, this is a must" stated the lot description, and it seems several collectors were in agreement. The Lamborghini was instantly the subject of competitive bidding the moment it crossed the block.

It quickly shot past its top estimate of 160,000 ($271,664), and after several minutes settled on a final price of 337,120 ($566,962) to a round of applause in the room.

The sale set a new UK auction record for the model - a result that comes hot on the heels of a new world record price achieved earlier this month.

A 1975 Lamborghini Countach LP400 'Periscopica' doubled its high estimate at the recent Bonhams sale in Greenwhich, Connecticut, realizing a price of $1.2 million.

"Interest in the Lamborghini Countach has long been eclipsed by other marque sports cars but this emphatic result demonstrates that it's now very much on the collectors' radar," said Historics Auction Director, Edward Bridger-Stille.

"It's also great that the car's creator, Marcello Gandini is now receiving the recognition he so richly deserves for such a landmark in automotive design."
