1982 Chteau Lafite-Rothschild doubles estimate

Romane-Conti, The Macallan 55 year old and a 1964 Bowmore trilogy also sold

Last week Christie's sold a selection of excellent bottles in their Fine Wines and Spirits sale.

The priciest lot to sell was a set of three magnums of 1962 Romane-Conti for $60,000. This was in line with the estimate, whilst six bottles of the 1952 vintage beat their $30,000-40,000 valuation to be taken away for $45,600.

Whisky lovers will be keen to know how the 1964 Bowmore trilogy and Macallan 55 year old got on.

The Bowmore trilogy consists of Gold, White and Black forms, released over the past three years. Only 701 bottles of the Gold were ever made, and this was the first sale of a trilogy.

Together a set of three bottles was estimated at $18,000-24,000, and they didn't disappoint selling for $21,600. It was the sale on everyone's lips, and perhaps now the whisky will be on someone's lips as well.

The Macallan 55 year old, released in 1999 and held in a uniquely designed Lalique decanter, likewise sold on target at $13,200.

It wasn't the priciest single bottle in the sale however. That honour went to a bottle of 1945 Romane-Conti wine, selling for $24,000 despite signs of seepage. It was an all round successful auction for Romane-Conti.

Perhaps the lot which got bidders on the floor most excited, however, was a dozen bottles of 1982 Chteau Lafite-Rothschild.

Expected to sell for as little as $18,000, the selection sparked some very competitive bidding and was eventually taken away for $38,400.

A good day for fine wines and spirits, and signs that the bottles can be a strong investment, as there will always be competition for them even in troubled economic times.
