Eight bottles of the illustrious 1982 Chateau Cheval Blanc sold on October 25

Eight bottles of 1982 Chateau Cheval Blanc commanded the highest bids in Bonhams' Fine & Rare Wines auction,held on October 25 in London.

1982 is a renowned year for Bordeaux, considered by many to be among the finest vintages of the 20th century. The summer of 1982 was blessed with fantastic weather, with particularly successful flowering on the vines in June and a heatwave in September that brought the grapes to perfect ripeness.

Chateau Cheval Blanc is one of just four vineyards in the Saint Emilion region to receive the Premier Grand Cru Classe. Bordering the renowned Chateau Petrus in Pomerol, it is among the most valuable wines from the region. The eight bottles offered at Bonhams achieved 4,140 ($6,672).

Also featuring were the famed "artist label" bottles from Chateau Mouton Rothschild. These bottles have understandably become highly collectible on the wine market, with the label for the 1986 vintage designed by Haitian artist Bernard Sejourne. 10 bottles featuring Sejourne's design were sold for 3,910 ($6,301).

Elsewhere,six bottles of the 1944 wartime vintage from Chateau Latour drew close to the top end of the 2,000-2,600 estimate to realise 2,530 ($4,075). However, a full case ofLatour from the same yearfailed to sell. Learn more about wartime wines with our preview of the sale.
