Another case of 1978 Romanee-Conti realised $301,723 - up 111% on an identical valuation.

This autumn has seen strong sales of Romanee-Conti, which is currently outperforming other Burgundies at almost every price point.

A sale on October 25-26 saw three bottles of the 2006 Romanee-Conti achieve $31,070 at Hart Davis Hart in Chicago.

An almost complete set of Chateau Latour wines, dating from 1881 to 2008 and comprised of 105 bottles, realised an identical figure of $301,723.

The auction achieved total sales of $9m, further cementing Hong Kong's status as one of the most significant centres for the sale of rare wines.

Simon Tam, Christie's head of wine in China, commented: "It was extremely gratifying to see wines from the legendary terroir of Champagne, Spain, Barolo and Australia reach new levels alongside the classics of the finest Bordeaux and Burgundy.

"This auction emphasized the growing demand and importance for premium wines with the finest provenance."
